New Canon is run by New Canon LLC.
Mailing address: [PO BOX OR BUSINESS ADDRESS, to be added before launch]
Privacy contact: legal@newcanon.ink
New Canon is a home for comics and manga by indie creators. It isn't open yet. Right now the only thing you can do on this site is join our email list. This page explains, in plain English, what we collect when you do that and what we do with it.
The short version
- We collect only what's needed to run our email list.
- We use it to send you the New Canon news and launch updates you asked for.
- We never sell your information.
- You can unsubscribe or ask us to delete your information anytime by emailing legal@newcanon.ink.
- New Canon is not for children under 13.
What we collect when you join the email list
- Your email address.
- Your interest: whether you told us you're a reader, a creator, or both.
- Where you signed up: for example, "landing page." This tells us which part of the site the signup came from.
- Your consent record: that you ticked the box agreeing to hear from us, which version of our signup wording you agreed to, and the date and time you signed up.
We don't ask for your name, address, phone number, or payment details to join the list, and we don't save your IP address in our email list.
Why we collect it
- Email address: to send you the New Canon news and launch updates you signed up for.
- Interest: so readers get news meant for readers, and creators get news meant for creators.
- Signup source: so we know which parts of the site are working.
- Consent record: so we can show that you chose to hear from us, and exactly what you agreed to.
Our legal reasons for using your information
Some privacy laws, including those in Europe and the UK, ask us to name the legal reason for each use:
- Your consent: we email you, and note whether you're a reader or a creator, because you ticked the box agreeing to it. You can withdraw your consent anytime by unsubscribing.
- Keeping the site safe: Cloudflare and its Turnstile spam check use technical information, like your IP address, to protect the site from bots and attacks. Laws like Europe's call this a "legitimate interest."
Where it's stored
We use outside services to run New Canon:
- Cloudflare hosts this website and runs the form that receives your signup.
- Supabase is the database where the email list is stored.
- Zoho Mail is our email provider. If you email us, including to ask us to delete your information, your message is stored there.
The email list isn't public. Website visitors can't see it. Only New Canon, and the services that run it for us, can access it.
Your information is stored in the United States
New Canon is run from the United States, and our email list is stored in the United States. If you sign up from another country, your information is sent to the US and handled there by us and the services listed above.
Spam protection and visiting the site
Like any website, Cloudflare handles basic technical information when you visit, such as your IP address (the number that identifies your internet connection) and your browser type. It uses this to deliver the page and block attacks. Our signup form also uses Cloudflare's spam check, called Turnstile, which looks at similar information to tell people apart from bots. When you sign up, your IP address is passed to Turnstile for that check only; we don't keep it.
We don't run ads, and we don't use advertising trackers on this site. Our intro video is hosted on our own site, not on a video service like YouTube.
We never sell your information
We don't sell, rent, or trade your information to anyone. We only share it with the services that help us run New Canon, such as Cloudflare, Supabase, and Zoho Mail, and only so they can do that job. We'll also share it if the law requires us to.
How long we keep it
- While you're on the list: we keep your signup information.
- If you unsubscribe: we stop emailing you right away. We keep your email address and the date you unsubscribed, only so we never email you again by mistake.
- If you ask us to delete your information: we permanently remove everything, including that unsubscribe record, within 30 days. If you sign up again later, you'll start fresh.
Unsubscribing and deleting your information
- To unsubscribe: when we send newsletters, every one will include an unsubscribe link. You can also email legal@newcanon.ink anytime and ask to be removed.
- To delete your information: email legal@newcanon.ink from the address you signed up with and ask us to delete it. We'll confirm when it's done.
Your privacy rights
Wherever you live, you can ask us to:
- Show you your information: send you a copy of what we have about you.
- Correct it: fix anything that's wrong.
- Delete it: remove it permanently, as described above.
- Stop using it: take back your consent, or ask us to stop emailing you.
To make a request, email legal@newcanon.ink from the address you signed up with, so we know the request is really from you. We'll handle it within 30 days. We'll never treat you differently for asking.
If you live in Europe or the UK, you can also complain to your local data protection authority.
Children
New Canon is not for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 13. If you think a child under 13 has signed up, email legal@newcanon.ink and we'll delete their information.
When Founding Creator applications open, applicants will need to be 18 or older.
Changes to this policy
As New Canon grows (for example, when reader accounts or creator applications launch), this policy will change. We'll update the effective date at the top of this page. If we make a big change to how we use your information, we'll tell people on the email list before it takes effect.
